Sony President Says That 'Venom 2' Paved The Way For 'Top Gun Maverick' And The Resurgence of Movie Theaters

There's spin zones, and then there's the Sony President saying that 'Venom 2' saved cinema.

“When we first started releasing movies last October, there were really no other big movies,” Greenstein said. “Everyone had pushed their big movies to this year, to this summer. We took a big gamble putting ‘Venom’ in theaters. Then we doubled down with ‘Ghostbusters.’ Then our biggest bet was when every other tentpole had fled, we tripled down with ‘Spider-Man’ — our biggest, most important piece of IP.”

“There’s so much press about ‘Top Gun’ right now. It’s like, ‘The movie business is back!'” Panitch said. “In a weird way, I would say ‘Top Gun’ is benefitting from us taking our shot. ‘Venom’ is the start of that story that allows ‘Top Gun’ to do the kind of business it did. These things don’t happen overnight. It’s a seeding.” (Variety)

Honestly I'm just impressed with the gall Sony had to say this. I find myself to be a pretty big movie guy and I honestly didn't know they came out with a second Venom movie. Apparently I missed out big considering it saved the movies as we know it.

Never mind movies like Godzilla vs. Kong, The Batman, or Spiderman: No Way Home. Nah, you guys are missing the big picture here (pun intended). It was this guy

Not these guys

Top Gun: Maverick? You think people are getting off their couch to go see another Tom Cruise blockbuster thriller on their own? Not without Venom they aren't. It's just like how everyone says The Short Porch paved the way for Macrodosing and The Yak. It was always Venom 2. It was always the Porch.

Tom Cruise should be thanking his lucky stars Tom Hardy agreed to go for another go around.

I genuinely wish I could see the Sony guys saying this out loud. There's no way they actually kept a straight face right? If they did it would be better than any acting portrayed in Venom 2.
